Senator Suhas Subramanyam Awarded “Gun Sense Distinction” by Moms Demand Action
Award Signifies Leadership on Key Campaign Issue for Subramanyam
Ashburn, VA – Today, Senator Suhas Subramanyam, Obama White House Alumnus and Candidate for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, was awarded the Gun Sense Distinction by Moms Demand Action. The award was given to Senator Subramanyam for his advocacy to help prevent gun violence.
The “Gun Sense Distinction” was given to Senator Subramanyam on the 17th anniversary of the infamous Virginia Tech shooting in Blacksburg, VA, where 32 people were killed and dozens more injured.
Moms Demand Action uses the Gun Sense Distinction to signal to their supporters, volunteers and voters across northern Virginia that Senator Subramanyam advocates for gun violence prevention and will govern with gun safety in mind.
“I am honored to receive the Gun Sense Distinction,” said Senator Subramanyam. “Passing common sense gun violence prevention measures is proven to save lives across the Commonwealth and make people feel safer. I don't want my two girls to live in a future where they feel safe in their schools instead of needing armed security, active shooter drills, and bulletproof windows.”
This legislative session, Subramanyam was the primary author of SB 273, which would establish a 5 day firearm purchase waiting period for any gun purchased in the Commonwealth of Virginia, intended to disrupt impulsive self-harm or acts of violence. Subramanyam’s bill passed the Senate by a vote of 21-19 a day after activist David Hogg visited the Virginia legislature to promote gun violence prevention.
Firearm purchase waiting periods are a top priority of several leading gun violence prevention organizations, including Everytown, Giffords, Moms Demand Action, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Firearm purchase waiting periods are opposed by the National Rifle Association.
Subramanyam also passed 4 more bills that enhance gun safety for the Commonwealth through the legislature:
Chief Co-Patron for SB 99 - prohibits automatic weapons from being carried in public (passed 21-19)
Chief co-Patron for SB 100 - prohibits manufacturing concealable firearms (passed 21-19)
Chief co-Patron for SB 210 - prohibits sale of devices to make weapons automatic (passed 28-12)
Chief Co-Patron for SB 522 - mandatory firearms training (passed 21-19)
Senator Subramanyam is committed to breaking the stronghold the NRA and gun manufacturers have had over elected officials, instead siding with the majority of Virginians who want sensible gun control reforms that protect our communities.

Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to public service as a State Senator, Obama White House advisor, Capitol Hill staffer, and as a Loudoun volunteer firefighter/EMT. In Richmond, he has worked across the aisle to pass gun violence prevention bills, protect democracy, and defend abortion rights. Senator Subramanyam is best positioned to keep VA-10 in Democratic hands because he represents more VA-10 constituents than any of the 16 primary election candidates, and he has consistently outperformed the Democratic ticket and delivered for his constituents. Suhas resides in Ashburn, Virginia (in VA-10) with his wife, Miranda, and their two daughters.
