Senator Suhas Subramanyam Calls on Governor Youngkin to Sign Drug Affordability Legislation
Subramanyam Urges Governor Youngkin to Lower Costs for Virginians
Ashburn, VA – Today, Senator Suhas Subramanyam, Obama White House Alumnus and Candidate for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, called on Governor Youngkin to sign SB 274, a bill that Subramanyam was Chief Co-Patron of in the Virginia Senate. SB 274 would establish a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) in Virginia to allow the Commonwealth to stop price gouging and lower costs for Virginians. Subramanyam had introduced this legislation in the General Assembly last year.
“SB 274 allows us to stop price gouging and protect Virginians,” said Senator Subramanyam. “The United States has some of the highest prescription drug prices in the world, and I’m glad we have the opportunity to stop the price gouging that makes even the most basic medications unaffordable. Our Commonwealth should not tolerate financial hardship and bankruptcy because people need life-saving medication.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. prices across all drugs (brands and generics) were nearly 2.78 times as high as prices in the comparison countries in 2022.
Along with SB 274, Subramanyam also authored SB 186, a bill that allows the Commonwealth to study wholesale drug importation, with the goal of importing cheaper prescription drugs from other countries to lower costs for Virginians. SB 186 is on the Governor’s desk awaiting a signature.
