Key Gun Violence Prevention Bills from Senator Subramanyam Vetoed by Gun Lobby-Backed Governor
Vetoes Are Joined By Some Key Legislative Wins for Subramanyam
Ashburn, VA – Today, Senator Suhas Subramanyam, Obama White House Alumnus and Candidate for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, responded to Governor Youngkin’s signing and vetoes of critical gun violence prevention bills that he was the Patron or Chief Co-Patron on in the Senate.
“Passing common sense gun violence prevention measures will make people safer and save lives across the Commonwealth,” said Senator Subramanyam. “I want my two girls to live in a future where they feel safe in their schools instead of needing armed security, active shooter drills, and bulletproof windows.”
“While I’m glad we got some critical reforms signed in to law, we must do better. I am not giving up on passing common sense legislation to protect families like ours in the future. I am used to taking on tough fights, and will continue to stand up to anyone who gets in the way of making a positive difference for Virginia families.”
Three of Subramanyam’s critical bills were vetoed:
Chief Patron for SB 273 - establishes a five-day waiting period for firearm purchases
Chief Co-Patron for SB 2 - prohibits importation, sale, manufacture, or purchase of automatic weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices
Chief Co-Patron for SB 99 - prohibits automatic weapons from being carried in public
Two of Subramanyam’s bills were signed in to law:
Chief Co-Patron for SB 100 - prohibits manufacturing undetectable firearms (signed in to law with amendments)
Chief Co-Patron for SB 210 - prohibits sale of devices to make weapons automatic
Subramanyam is the primary author of SB 273, which would establish a 5 day firearm purchase waiting period for any gun purchased in the Commonwealth of Virginia, intended to disrupt impulsive self-harm or acts of violence. Subramanyam’s bill passed the Senate a day after activist David Hogg visited the Virginia legislature to promote gun violence prevention.
Firearm purchase waiting periods are a top priority of several leading gun violence prevention organizations, including Everytown, Giffords, Moms Demand Action, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Firearm purchase waiting periods are opposed by the National Rifle Association.
Senator Subramanyam is committed to breaking the stronghold the NRA and gun manufacturers have had over elected officials, instead siding with the majority of Virginians who want sensible gun control reforms that protect our communities.
SB 2 Assault firearms & certain ammunition, etc.; purchase, possession, sale, transfer, etc., prohibited.

Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to public service as a State Senator, Obama White House advisor, Capitol Hill staffer, and as a Loudoun volunteer firefighter/EMT. In Richmond, he has worked across the aisle to pass gun violence prevention bills, protect democracy, and defend abortion rights. Senator Subramanyam is best positioned to keep VA-10 in Democratic hands because he represents more VA-10 constituents than any of the 16 primary election candidates, and he has consistently outperformed the Democratic ticket and delivered for his constituents. Suhas resides in Ashburn, Virginia (in VA-10) with his wife, Miranda, and their two daughters.
