ICYMI: Senator Suhas Subramanyam Calls for Action to Stop Greenway Toll Hikes

Call Comes on Heels of Hearing To Raise Greenway Tolls

Ashburn, VA – Senator Suhas Subramanyam issued a call for citizen action to stop proposed Greenway toll hikes. A toll hike request was recently initiated from for-profit corporation Toll Road Investors Partnership II (TRIP II), and that request now goes to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for review.

The first SCC hearing on this issue was on January 9, 2024, and Senator Subramanyam attended with others to speak out against the proposed toll hike. The SCC will hold further hearings on the issue in Richmond next month.

Subramanyam was the primary author of HB 1832, a 2021 law which requires the SCC to prove that proposed increases don’t discourage too many drivers from using a toll road, and that the operating company doesn’t price gouge consumers for excessive profit.

“Tolls are high enough as they are, and this price increase will do even more harm to our community,” said Senator Subramanyam. “I have stood with Northern Virginians to protect citizens from unjustified, exorbitant tolls before, and I will do everything I can to stop hikes on already steep toll fees.”

Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to public service as a State Senator, Obama White House advisor, Capitol Hill staffer, and as a Loudoun volunteer firefighter/EMT. In Richmond, he has worked across the aisle to pass gun violence prevention bills, protect democracy, and defend abortion rights. Senator Subramanyam is best positioned to keep VA-10 in Democratic hands because he represents more VA-10 constituents than any of the 16 primary election candidates, and he has consistently outperformed the Democratic ticket and delivered for his constituents. Suhas resides in Ashburn, Virginia (in VA-10) with his wife, Miranda, and their two daughters.
