New Ruling: Subramanyam Law Prevents Toll Increase
New Ruling: Subramanyam Law Stops Toll Increase In A Win For Commuters And Working Families.
Ashburn, VA – Today, in a win for families across Northern Virginia, the Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) ruled against a proposed toll increase by Toll Road Investors Partnership II (TRIP II), and successfully utilized a law, HB 1832, passed by Suhas Subramanyam in 2021 in the Virginia General Assembly. This SCC ruling prevents a nearly 40% tolling increase for Dulles Greenway commuters during peak hours.
“I'm proud that our legislation delivered real results to prevent unjustified toll increases on the Greenway,” Subramanyam said. “Families are already facing rising costs across the board, and the TRIP II proposed toll increase would have further burdened our community. This win for working families is an example of how when we take on tough fights against special interests, we can make real change. I’ll continue to work with leaders in our community to fight price gouging like exorbitant toll hikes.”
Subramanyam was the primary author of HB 1832, which required the toll operating company to justify price increases and prevents them from price gouging consumers for excessive profit.
The proposed toll increase would have been from $5.80 to $8.10 during peak hours, which are from 6:30 AM–9 AM eastbound and 4 PM–6:30 PM westbound. During off-peak hours, the proposed toll increase would have been from $5.25 to $6.40.
The first SCC hearing on this issue was on January 9, 2024, where Senator Subramanyam attended with others to speak out against the proposed toll hike. Today’s SCC hearing was the final ruling on the proposed TRIP II price increase, and the SCC sided with commuters to prevent an increase of nearly 40% during peak hours, and nearly 22% during off-peak hours.

Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to public service as a State Senator, Obama White House advisor, Capitol Hill staffer, and as a Loudoun volunteer firefighter/EMT. In Richmond, he has worked across the aisle to pass gun violence prevention bills, protect democracy, and defend abortion rights. Senator Subramanyam is best positioned to keep VA-10 in Democratic hands because he represents more VA-10 constituents than any of the 16 primary election candidates, and he has consistently outperformed the Democratic ticket and delivered for his constituents. Suhas resides in Ashburn, Virginia (in VA-10) with his wife, Miranda, and their two daughters.
