Senator Subramanyam Decries Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Bump Stock Ban
Subramanyam: “Today’s Hyper-Partisan Supreme Court Decision…Undermines Our Safety”
Ashburn, VA – Today, Senator Suhas Subramanyam, Obama White House Alumnus and Candidate for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, released a statement criticizing today’s decision overturning a Trump administration regulation that banned the use of bump stocks nationwide after the 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas.
Subramanyam issued the following statement: “Today’s hyper-partisan Supreme Court decision overturning a commonsense gun violence prevention measure undermines our safety and unnecessarily endangers Americans. In the General Assembly, I've led the fight to protect children and families from gun violence - and I'll do the same in Congress. We should not have to lose more lives for this to be law, and Congress must act.”
Bump stocks convert otherwise legal semi-automatic weapons into illegal machine guns by making it functionally easy for multiple shots to be fired at the single pull of a trigger.
Subramanyam was the primary author of SB 273, which would establish a 5 day firearm purchase waiting period for any gun purchased in the Commonwealth of Virginia, intended to disrupt impulsive self-harm or acts of violence. This year alone, Subramanyam was also the Chief Co-Patron for:
SB 99 - prohibits automatic weapons from being carried in public (passed Senate 21-19)
SB 100 - prohibits manufacturing concealable firearms (passed Senate 21-19)
SB 210 - prohibits sale of devices to make weapons automatic (passed Senate 28-12)
SB 522 - mandatory firearms training (passed Senate 21-19)

Senator Suhas Subramanyam has dedicated his life to public service as a State Senator, Obama White House advisor, Capitol Hill staffer, and as a Loudoun volunteer firefighter/EMT. In Richmond, he has worked across the aisle to pass gun violence prevention bills, protect democracy, and defend abortion rights. Senator Subramanyam is best positioned to keep VA-10 in Democratic hands because he represents more VA-10 constituents than any of the 16 primary election candidates, and he has consistently outperformed the Democratic ticket and delivered for his constituents. Suhas resides in Ashburn, Virginia (in VA-10) with his wife, Miranda, and their two daughters.
